Class of 2009 Watch

Posted by roadster997 on October 31, 2006

Here are a few of the very best sophomores in Virginia. Not necessarily the top eight as I am not including such future greats as Dominic Davenport and Alan Castro. Colleges interested in a complete listing of the top sophomores should subscribe to my service.

Ross Metheny QB 6′2 175 Sherando Virginia

Metheny was a rare freshman starter at QB at the Virginia AA level and led his team to the Division 4 semifinals. He passed for an impressive 1,888 yards and 17 TDs. He’s a quick learner and a real student of the game. He just loves football. For a youngster, he has shown fine leadership skills. He gets nice velocity on his throws and throws a nice, catchable ball. Can make all the throws.

Sterling Phifer RB 5′10 195 Virginia Beach Landstown Virginia

Phifer was an impressive freshman RB who played in the shadows of talented super senior wideouts Percy Harvin and Damon McDaniel. As a sophomore, he has really risen to the challenge and, together with outstanding junior QB Xavier Boyce, is now the fulcrum point of the talented Landstown offense. Through early October he had rushed for 640 yards. He shows nice cutting ability, fine speed and has added about 15 pounds to his frame since his freshman season and is now running with more power. One of the nation’s top sophomores.

Quentin Hunter WR/QB/ATH 6′2 190 Orange County Virginia

Hunter had an opportunity to play some as a freshman at QB after standout Bradley Starks (West Virginia verbal) went down for an injury. This year, however, he has shifted to his natural position of WR and has really shined catching passes from Starks. In one game he had 10 receptions for 219 yards and a touchdown. He has also stood out at DB. In the first game of his sophomore season he had 3 interceptions for 100 return yards. As the team’s most talented underclassman, he will move back to QB as a junior, but his college future will be as either a WR or DB. He has excellent size for a WR, good speed, reacts well to the ball in a crowd and runs well in the open field.

Lemont Lewis TE/DL 6′4 205 Newport News Warwick Virginia

Lewis is one of the top underclassmen in the Tidewater Bay area. He is a talented TE/DE who has a great frame that should really fill out over the next few years. He runs well for his size and has good athleticism. One to really keep an eye on.

Jonathan Cawley OL 6′7 290 Richmond Huguenot Virginia

Huguenot has consistently produced high-level D-1 players over the years and Crawley is the top sophomore in Coach Richard McFee’s fine program. He has ideal size for an OT but also shows surprisingly nimble feet and athleticism for such a young a big prospect. Should emerge as one of the nation’s best linemen.

DeAntre Rhoades DL 6′3 250 Richmond Varina Virginia

Varina is another Richmond school that has produced quite a bit of D-1 talent over the years (most recently Michigan freshman RB Brandon Minor and Virginia Tech verbal Davon Morgan). Only the fourth freshman to start for Coach Wolfe at Varina (the others were former Penn State QB Mike Robinson and talented linemen Jonathan and Kevin Lewis). Very athletic, he also plays basketball. Was very impressive at the West Virginia summer camp in 2006. A future national recruit.

Telvion Clark LB 6′2 180 Norfolk Granby Virginia

Clark anchors Granby’s defensive unit as a sophomore linebacker after earning second team All-Eastern District honors as a freshman starter in a talent-laden district. He has fine quickness, gets a nice jump on the ball and really wraps up opposing ball carriers. Has the frame to fill out and eventually become a D-1 recruit.

Theron Norman DB/QB 6′3 170 Richmond Hermitage Virginia

Norman is a tall and rangy safety prospect who also plays QB for Hermitage. He has a nice frame, anticipates well and has good closing speed. One of the better young prospects in the Richmond area.

Class of 2009 Watch

Posted by roadster997 on October 27, 2006

Today I am starting my posting of thumbnails on some of the nation’s top underclassmen

Kevin Graf OL/DL 6′6 277 5.2 Augura California

Kevin is among the nation’S very best sophomore offensive linemen. He transferred to Augura after playing on the varsity at powerful Westlake Village Oaks Christian (Jimm y Clausen’s and Marc Tyler’s school)as a freshman. He has excellent size and shows unusually good body control for such a young and big lineman. He can really move the pile0 and plays pretty low for his size. He looked quite good at the 2006 USC summer camp going up against some of the area’s top rising seniors.

Shane Gordon LB/RB 6′2 220 4.7 Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna Florida

Gordon is an outstanding young talent for a strong Chaminade-Madonna program. As a freshman he was named Second Team All-Broward-3A-1A by the Miami Herald. Considered by some ot be the top sophomore in talent-laden Broward County. Does a great job of stepping up and filling the hole and pursues well from sideleine-to-sideline. Reads and reacts well. Great combination of size and speed. One of the nation’s best.

Alfonzo Sylvester WR 5′11 175 4.5 Bolingbrook Illinois

One of the top sophomore WRs in the midwest. Doing a good job stepping in for former all-american Carl Fisher. Nice quikness, soft hands and shows good body control when going up for the ball. Has an extra gear.

Khyran Major RB/DB 5′10 165 4.5 Detroit Crockett Michigan

Crockett has produced several D-1 kids recently (Brandon Graham and John Thompson at Michigan, Ed Johnson at Penn State just top name a few) and Major is a youngster who has the potential to join them down the road. He is a quick and elusive RB who led Crockett in rushing dsuring the nine game regular season, carrying the pigskin 86 times for 795 yards (9.24 ypc) and 5 TDs. He runs with nice vision and pretty good power for his size, shows nice change of direction and really can dart through the line. One of the top sophomores in Michigan.

Tromarcus Toney QB/PK 6′1 175 Memphis Melrose Tennessee

Tromarcus could be the next great to emerge out of the always talent-laden Melrose program. Tonye has both a nice arm and quick feet, but his bigest asset is his composure on the field and his decision-making skills. He understands when to get rid of the football and when to take off and scramble. A versatile performer who also started as a freshman kicker.

Shane Delery DL 6′3 220 4.80 New Orleans Jesuit Louisiana

Delery was First Team All-District (District 7-1A) as a freshman at Baton Rouge Dunham. He transferred to Jesuit for his sophomore year. Still a “puppy”, he has the frame to get much, much bigger. Great quickness off the ball. Was very impressive playing 1A ball as a freshman, showing an innate ability to read plays and get to the ball.

Class of 2007: Kickers

Posted by roadster997 on October 13, 2006

Most of the thumbnails listed below were written in the spring/early summer. Rankings have been slightly modified since then. Some talented combo-kickers will be listed in the ranking for punters that I will be posting in the next couple of days.

Top 95

1 Bill Bennett PK 6′2 190 4.95 San Diego Torrey Pines California Boston College Ranked by kicking guru Chris Sailer as the top placekicker in the nation already as a junior. As a junior, he was named Second Team All-CIF after making 6 field goals with a long of 51 yards. He also connected on 41 PATs. 86% of his kickoffs were touchbacks. As live of a leg that you will find in high school. He has won every kicking contest west of the Mississippi. Bennett committed to Boston College in March. 2-Hall of Champions-San Diego Section Team; 1-PS-All-San Diego Section Offers: AZST, BC, SDST, UTEP, KANST, LSU

2 Matt Szymanski PK/P 6′1 170 A&M Consolidated Texas Texas A&M Szymanski is the top combo kicker-punter in the nation. He has an unbelievably strong leg, not quite as accurate as Bill Bennett but stronger. He consistently blasts kickoffs 70 yards plus and punts over 40 yards with exceptional hang time. At the Chris Sailer camps he led the nation in both kickoff distance and punting average. He also has excellent 4.6 hang time on his punts. He has shined on the field (First Team All-State) and at other camps as well. He committed to Texas A&M back in June of 2005. 66-JRS-TEX (Winter 2006); 97-JRS-TEX (December 2005); 1–Central Texas (K); 1-District 13-5A (K&P) Offers: A&M, TEN, OK, AZST, UTEP, CAL

3 Jimmy Stevens PK 5′7 155 Oklahoma City Heritage Hall Oklahoma Oklahoma A First Team Student Sports Junior All-American. Stevens has a live leg, gets his kickoffs high and deep and has excellent accuracy as a field goal kicker. He recorded a remarkable 22 field goals as a junior. He committed to Oklahoma in August. Offers: OK

4 Josh Cherry PK/P/DB 6′0 163 5.06 McCook Nebraska Kansas State Cherry was a First Team Omaha World All-State selection as a junior after going 9 for 13 on filed goal attempts with a long of 52 yards. 80% of his kickoffs went for touchbacks. He has hit from 63 yards in practice. Also a pretty good DB. Cherry committed to Kansas State in March. Top 12 NEB ( – Winter 2006); 1-Omaha World-Herald-AS (K); 1-Omaha World-Herald-B-AS (P); 1-Lincoln Journal Star-B-AS; 1-McCook Daily Gazette-Area (Super 45) Offers: KANST

7 Stephen Hoge PK/P 6′4 180 Oklahoma City Putnam City North Oklahoma What a year for kickers in Oklahoma City, with Hoge joining Stevens among the nation’s elite. Unlike Stevens, who is short and compact, Hoge is tall and powerful, with an even more live leg than Stevens. He also is right there with Stevens in termns of accuracy. As a sophomore, Hoge connected on 10 of 11 field goals including a 44-yarder against powerful Jenks in the state Class 6A semis. In fact, as a sophomore he beat out Stevens for Daily Oklahoman First Team All-State honors. 2-OkPrepXtra.com-AS; 1-PS-Overall-AS (Oklahoma City Daily Oklahoman); 1-PS-6A-AS (Oklahoma City Daily Oklahoman)
