Class of 2012: Some Super Freshmen to Watch

Posted by roadster997 on October 31, 2008

Some freshmen have begun to emerge as future D-I prospects. Here are a few to keep an eye on, including some familiar names:

Name: Maty Mauk
Class: 2012

City/School: Kenton
State: Ohio
National Ranking Position: 1

Name: Barry Sanders Jr.
Class: 2012
Position: RB/DB
Height: 5′10
Weight: 170
Forty: 4.60
City/School: Oklahoma City Heritage Hall
State: Oklahoma
National Ranking Position: 3
Rating: 5
News And Notes: One of the top freshmen in Oklahoma……………..Through 7 games as a freshman RB on a 2A team he had 39 carries for 248 yards (6.36ypc) and 3 TDs………..Could start at RB as a freshman on a 14-1 2A team………….The son of former Oklahoma State and Detroiut Lion superstar Barry Sanders……………Wed August 13, 2008 Heritage Hall’s Sanders Jr. already drawing praise from team By Zach West Daily Oklahoman: “Watching Barry Sanders Jr. sprint and juke his way through two-a-day football drills, Heritage Hall coach Andy Bogert couldn’t help but marvel at the freshman. “He’s already bigger than his dad,” Bogert said. “And he’s only going to get bigger, stronger and faster.” Bogert was just happy Sanders had a helmet to wear. Sanders was one of 31 freshmen and 81 players overall who came out for the first day of high school practices on Tuesday. The record turnout — 62 was the previous high — nearly caused the Chargers to run out of equipment, including helmets. “We got lucky and ordered another 20 extra helmets,” Bogert said. Making matters more interesting, Bogert moved the Chargers’ morning practice to the school’s indoor facility because the outdoor fields were too wet. Squeezing 81 kids indoors proved challenging. Still, slightly cramped conditions and water couldn’t dampen Heritage Hall’s positive outlook. After all, the Chargers are coming off a state runner-up season, return several key athletes such as senior Turner Petersen, and suddenly find themselves with more players than they quite know what to do with. Oh, and they’re also welcoming the son of Barry Sanders, the legendary Oklahoma State and Detroit Lions running back. “He’s a player,” said Petersen, grinning. “We’re going to love having him out there, once he gets his head on straight for some high school ball — hits some people. But he’s going to be ready, and he’s going to help us out a lot.” While he likely won’t start, Bogert said, the 5-foot-10, 170-pound Sanders should see the field some on offense, defense and special teams. “He’s got loads of potential,” Bogert said. “He’s going to be really good.” As for how good he is right now, everyone pointed to Friday — the first day in full pads — as a sufficient measuring stick. “I’m pretty excited for when we first get to pad up,” Sanders said. “I think I’ve just gotten more mature as a football player. Coming in from eighth grade, things are a little slower, competition level wasn’t as big. High school level, it’s a big adjustment, but hopefully I can adjust — fast.” Petersen has recovered from a sprained ankle suffered several weeks ago. The injury kept the seniorout of the Top Gun Challenge in Tulsa. Other than an ankle wrap, Petersen showed no ill effects on Tuesday. “It’s fine,” Petersen said. “I didn’t sleep at all last night. I couldn’t wait to get back out here. I was so excited for today.” Heritage Hall’s freshman group is so large that Bogert plans on fielding a freshman team with its own schedule for the first time ever. “That helps immensely,” Bogert said. “The more you can get in the mix in a game situation, the more you can progress.” Heritage Hall players all wore shirts with the No. 43 to honor teammate Ford Price. The senior was diagnosed this spring with Ewing’s sarcoma, a cancer that has forced him to undergo chemotherapy as well as a recent surgery in Boston. Sanders Jr. isn’t sure of when his dad will make it to Oklahoma for games. He is certain of which game he wants him to attend. Week 1, the Chargers will take on Casady in the annual Polo Bowl.”…………Other interesting tidbits from Heritage Hall: *Today marked the first high school practice for Barry Sanders, Jr., the son of former OSU and NFL legend Barry Sanders. Sanders, Jr., a 5-10, 170-pound freshman, already runs a 4.6-second 40-yard-dash and will likely see the field on offense, defense and special teams this year, Bogert said. “He’s got loads of potential,” Bogert said. “And he’s only going to get bigger, stronger and faster. He’s going to be really good.”……………..It is early, but freshman *Barry Sanders Jr. (son of NFL legend Barry Sanders) is already drawing praise, according to an August story in The Oklahoman…………….2008 season (Week 4): 1. Heritage Hall (3-0, 1) – Defeated Alva, 40-0. Turner Peterson rushed for 204 yards on 15 carries, scoring three touchdowns for the Chargers. Peterson also hit freshman Barry Sanders Jr. on a 20-yard touchdown pass in the win.

News And Notes: One of the top freshmen in Oklahoma……………..Freshman starter at MLB and through 7 games he had 89 tackles and 3 sacks…………….Will start as a freshman on a 14-1 2A team…………2008 season: 1. Heritage Hall (5-0, 2-0, 1) – Defeated Kingfisher, 28-2. Converted wide receiver Turner Peterson (620 rushing yards, 9 TDs; 6 passing TDs; 25 tackles, 4 INTs) has been outstanding at quarterback for the Chargers. Freshman Marc Robinson (68 tackles, 2 sacks) has received rave reviews from Division I schools already………………….September 2008: Barry Sanders Jr. has created some buzz at Heritage Hall, but the Chargers have another freshman who is contributing on defense. Middle linebacker Marc Robinson (5-foot-10, 175 pounds)has 41 tackles through three games, including 17 against Weatherford and 13 against Davis. “We were short a Mike linebacker, and he just kept showing up and making plays at every practice,” Heritage Hall coach Andy Bogert said. “Kids like that don’t come around very often. We’re fortunate to have a good group of freshman. We’re playing four or five of them, so I think that’s helped him settle in a little bit.” Bogert said coaches from Oklahoma State visited the school to look at film of safety Turner Peterson, when one coach asked about Robinson. Bogert told themRobinson

On his first carry in a Niceville football uniform, the 5-foot-8, 170-pound junior halfback exploded for a 56-yard touchdown run against Crestview in a spring game. Now, Finch, who transferred to Niceville from Edmond North High in Edmond, Okla., is eager to cash-in for the Eagles when it really counts. He arrives at Niceville with a highly-touted reputation and much expectation. “I don’t really think it’s pressure,” said Finch, a 2008 Daily News Dandy Dozen selection. “I don’t really think about stuff like that. I was nervous before the Crestview game, but I scored on my first carry. I just go into the season and play the way I know I can play.” How can he play? As a sophomore last season, Finch started every game for Edmond North and accumulated 1,600 all-purpose yards and 14 touchdowns while touching the ball in a variety of ways. At Niceville, he’ll do much the same, rushing the ball, catching it and returning punts. “Wherever the coach puts me, that’s where I play,” Finch said “I just try to contribute to the team, help us to win. My goal is just winning games.” Niceville coach John Hicks anticipates seeing some magic from his new arrival. “Roy is so explosive and can change directions so well,” Hicks said. “He gives you the one thing that a lot of players can’t, and that’s the ability to make a guy miss. That usually results in big plays.”

Bray has had his problems at both schools, including a five-day suspension from Canyon during the spring semester of his freshman year, followed by a few run-ins at Alemany last season, one resulting in a one-game suspension. “We’re on good terms. We just have to make sure Antonio is eligible in terms of residency and grades,” Canyon coach Chris Varner said. “There’s no question about his ability. No one can argue that he’s something special. I think he’s matured, too. We’ll see.” Bray, who scored seven touchdowns last season for Alemany, including two on kick returns, practiced with Canyon for the first time Wednesday. “He looks good. He looks fast,” Varner said

News And Notes: One of the top junior RBs on the Florida Gulf Coast………….He transferred from Sarasota Out-of-Door Academy to Bradenton Southeast for his junior year…………He rushed for almost 2,000 yards as a freshman and sophomore at a 1B school…………2.8 GPA………..ODA transfer Bowden brings skills to Southeast By RYAN T. BOYD, Bradenton Herald : “After rushing for nearly 2,000 yards the past two seasons at Out-of-Door Academy, Waymon Bowden needed a change – and a challenge. At ODA, the tailback known for his bruising style plowed over opponents from small schools in Class 1B. However, the school on the Manatee-Sarasota county border gave Bowden a solid educational foundation as he carried a 2.8 grade-point average. But he still needed more from an athletic standpoint. So this summer, the 5-foot-8, 190-pound Bowden opted to take the challenge and relieve a strain on his family. He transferred to Southeast High, a school where his father, Waymon Bowden Sr., was a standout linebacker in the mid-1980s “It was more easy on me location-wise,” said the two-time Herald All-Area team selection. “My family had trouble getting me back and forth, and I felt it was time for a challenge, and it would be easier on me and my family.” Waymon Bowden Sr. said his son felt he’d reached his peak for the Thunder and he needed a bigger test on a bigger stage. Not to mention, it was a chance to follow in his father’s footsteps Waymon Sr. really liked ODA and was thrilled with the educational base the school laid for his son, so he stalled on giving Waymon Jr. – who scored 22 touchdowns in two season for the Thunder – the OK to transfer. “I wanted to see if his heart was really into the decision,” the elder Bowden said. A few weeks later, the father and son revisited the issue, and little Waymon convinced his father. “Really, he wanted to play where I played,” Waymon Bowden Sr. said of his son, who’s received interest from Florida State, LSU and Rutgers. “He enjoyed ODA, but he wouldn’t have been satisfied with how things would have turned out not playing at Southeast.” Southeast opens the season at Palmetto at 7:30 p.m. today. Last season, the Tigers beat the Noles in a heartbreaker 14-10. It was Palmetto’s first win over Southeast in 15 years. Paul Maechtle, Southeast’s long-time coach, isn’t an advocate of students transferring from school to school inside the same county, but Bowden is the type of talent coaches wouldn’t mind compromising their views for. “It’s like when they added the shot clock in college basketball, people for awhile didn’t like it,” he said. “Now they love it. You just learn to adjust to (transfers). You just realize you are going to lose a few, and along the way you are going to gain someone. This year we are the beneficiary.” The Noles’ running back position was immediately bolstered with the arrival of Bowden. However, Maechtle must decide how to distribute the carries between starting sophomore tailback Desmond Blue and Bowden. For Bowden, the transition from Class 1B to Class 4A hasn’t been easy. He must have proper technique, run low to the ground, and run through the designated holes on the 4A level. Just operating off natural talent isn’t an option anymore. Last Friday in Southeast’s preseason game at Seminole High, Bowden rushed for 44 yards on nine carries. “The (competition) is a lot faster,” said Bowden, who wears jersey No. 33, the same number his father wore. “They are more aggressive. I don’t think it will be too hard to adjust to.” He wanted the challenge, and now Bowden must prove he’s up to the task. “People are saying that I’m not going to do here what I did at ODA,” he said. ” I’m not worried about that. When I came here the players accepted me with open arms, so I’m going to go out and play hard like I normally do.”"………………………….Sarasota Herald Tribune “August 29. 2007 10:22AM Ackerman, ODA sophomores will be strong It’s starting to become clear that the Out-of-Door Academy football team will have its best season two years from now, in 2009. That’s because its sophomore class keeps getting better. And the players keep doing more for the team. A perfect example of that is Brian Ackerman, a sophomore linebacker who will also be the backup tailback to fellow sophomore Waymon Bowden on the offense.”I saw that Brian is physical, he has nice feet and decent vision,” ODA coach Brett Timmons said. “We can experiment with him with a few touches here and there because we need to find a backup for Waymon because he’s not a machine and he can’t go all game long. With Brian playing linebacker and being aggressive we felt as a staff that he would fit the mold of what we were trying to do.” Ackerman will be joined in the linebacking corps by Bowden, fellow sophomore Sam Logan (Cardinal Mooney transfer) and junior Crispian Green. And they will be playing right behind a line that features sophomore defensive end Jamie Onufrak. And that’s not even mentioning sophomore A.J. Strong, who will be out for the season after shoulder surgery but was at practice on the sidelines in a sling Tuesday……………….Tampa Underclass Combine-April 22, 2007: Named the fastest freshman……………….Bowden named Class 1A honorable mention all-stateHERALD STAFF Out-of-Door Academy freshman and Manatee County resident Waymon Bowden Jr. was named honorable mention all-state for Class 1A football in balloting released Monday. Bowden, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound running back, missed the season’s first two regular-season games but made an immediate impact when added to the Thunder lineup. He scored two touchdowns to help ODA to its first victory on school history. A member of the Manatee Mustangs Midgets championship team in 2005, Bowden also played linebacker for the Thunder.

With the fiasco apparently behind him, Dash can focus on making it all worth the trouble. He rushed for 1,211 yards last year for a 2-8 Fontana team. In theory at least, Dash could run wild in Jeff Steinberg’s spread offense at Miller. “I think it was a good decision coming here,” Dash said. “I like it a lot because I like the system and what we do. Class of 2010: Michigan Lands Two Outstanding Wide Receivers

Posted by roadster997 on October 2, 2008

It has been a great week on the recruiting front for Rich Rodriguez and his staff.  Last week they landed versatile Cass Tech prospect Thomas Gordon, who will likely play safety at Michigan.  This week they have picked up early verbals from two of the top junior WRs in the nation – Ricardo Miller and Jeremy Jackson.

Who are some other junior prospects that Michigan fans should keep man eye on?  Prospects such as Dior Mathis, William Gholston, Austin White, Marvin Robinson and Chistian Lombard are names well-known to fans of Michigan recruiting.  What about some off-the-radar prospects who could eventually receive offers?  I’ll be identifying some of these prospects over the next few weeks, starting today.

Below are my bios on the two most recent Michigan verbals and a few “sleepers” to watch out for.
