On his first carry in a Niceville football uniform, the 5-foot-8, 170-pound junior halfback exploded for a 56-yard touchdown run against Crestview in a spring game. Now, Finch, who transferred to Niceville from Edmond North High in Edmond, Okla., is eager to cash-in for the Eagles when it really counts. He arrives at Niceville with a highly-touted reputation and much expectation. “I don’t really think it’s pressure,” said Finch, a 2008 Daily News Dandy Dozen selection. “I don’t really think about stuff like that. I was nervous before the Crestview game, but I scored on my first carry. I just go into the season and play the way I know I can play.” How can he play? As a sophomore last season, Finch started every game for Edmond North and accumulated 1,600 all-purpose yards and 14 touchdowns while touching the ball in a variety of ways. At Niceville, he’ll do much the same, rushing the ball, catching it and returning punts. “Wherever the coach puts me, that’s where I play,” Finch said “I just try to contribute to the team, help us to win. My goal is just winning games.” Niceville coach John Hicks anticipates seeing some magic from his new arrival. “Roy is so explosive and can change directions so well,” Hicks said. “He gives you the one thing that a lot of players can’t, and that’s the ability to make a guy miss. That usually results in big plays.”.”

City/School: Anaheim Servite

News And Notes: One of the top juniors in California……………Junior starter at DT for a powerful program…………Ineligible to play at Servite as a sophomore due to personal issues……………He transferred from Orange Lutheran to Anaheim Servite for his sophomore year………………….One of 3 freshmen on a powerful 14-1 team and he had no stats (OL/DL)………….Great size & strength, motor always on go, fine bull rusher……….1-DL-Southern Section (Los Angeles Times; August 2008): 1. Kirifi Taula, Servite, 6-4, 275, Jr.; All indications are he’s the real deal………………From The Los Angeles Times:  HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL Kirifi Taula gets a new start at Servite The junior defensive tackle, who started his high school career at Orange Lutheran, had to sit out last season and hopes to fulfill his potential. Eric Sondheimer August 30, 2008 Sixth in a series previewing top high school players: The wait is almost over for 16-year-old defensive tackle Kirifi Taula, a 6-foot-4, 275-pound Samoan giant who sat out his sophomore football season after transferring to Anaheim Servite from Orange Lutheran. “There’s hype about how good I am, but no one has seen me play,” he said. Servite Coach Troy Thomas said Taula was his team’s best defensive lineman last season even though he never played in a game. His job was to emulate the opposing team’s top lineman in practice. He also got to go against 6-7, 280-pound Servite tackle Matt Kalil, now a freshman at USC. “I beat him a couple times, but he got me,” Taula said. “It was good experience.” Taula will finally make his varsity debut on Sept. 5 against Santa Fe Springs St. Paul, and Servite coaches can’t wait to turn him loose. “Every week he’d simulate the best defensive lineman, and every week we thought he was better than the guy we faced,” Thomas said. Combining quickness and power, Taula has options when trying to get through or around blockers. “That’s what makes him special,” Thomas said. “He can power you, and he’s athletic. He’s got a little wiggle. With a defensive lineman, you get them either fast or powerful. What separates great defensive linemen is a guy who can do both.” Taula played on Orange Lutheran’s freshman and junior varsity teams, but a broken arm and broken thumb limited his playing time. That didn’t stop him from making an impression on varsity Coach Jim Kunau, who called him one of the best players from Orange Lutheran’s class of 2010. But Taula was asked to leave school after a disciplinary incident that he blames on himself. “God gave me an obstacle to go through and I failed,” he said. “Then he gave me a second chance to go to Servite to prove myself as a football player and student. “I was on the wrong track. It was my fault. I’ve changed a lot. It was sort of a wake-up call for me.” For the last year, Thomas said Taula has been a model student on and off the field. “He’s a fun kid to be around,” he said. “He knows when to have fun and when to work. He’s got this big smile.” Taula’s smile comes out when he successfully downs a quarterback. Sacks give him great pleasure. “I get this tingling feeling,” he said. Taula knows how to turn up the intensity during a game. “I’m a nice guy — except on the field,” he said. “Then nobody likes me. The way I play, I never talk. I always have my game face on.” When he went to Texas for a two-week trip last June to visit a cousin, it came as no surprise that a high school football coach suggested he stay. “The coach kept talking to me, ‘We’ll buy you a house if you go to my school,’ ” Taula said. “I think he was joking.” Clearly, there’s much anticipation for what Taula might be able to accomplish this season and what kind of player he really is. “I can’t wait,” he said. “I just want to show how good I am.”.

Following Monday’s practice, Crusaders coach Bob Henriquez said lineman Chaz Green (6-foot-6, 268 pounds, far right) and receiver Jordan Jones (6-4, 185, near right), formerly of Palm Harbor University, have joined the team. Green is a particularly big catch. The Crusaders, who graduated four of five starters on the offensive line, can use the help up front. In Green, they’ve gotten themselves a solid tackle who has big-time potential. In fact, after performing well at various camps this summer, he earned a scholarship offer from USF — even though he’s only a junior. Green also could see action at tight end and on the defensive line. “He,” Henriquez said, “has a huge upside. He’s an outstanding athlete. He’s raw. He hasn’t played a lot.” Jones, also a junior, gives TC another solid skill player. And they already have several.

Forty:

National Ranking Position: 78

News And Notes: One of the top junior DL prospects in Florida………….Junior starter at DT for Armwood and could also start at OT………………He transferred from Tampa Bay Tech to Seffner-Armwood for his junior year………….Sophomore starter on the OL for a 6-4 4A team…………Drawing comparisons to former Armwood all-american DT Torrey Davis…………….One of 8 freshman on a 0-10 4A team that provided no stats…………….Also plays varsity basketball……..tampabay.com:  Bailey holds his own up front (August 2008): Most of you know about all-everything defensive end Ryne Giddins. And in today’s Times, John C. Cotey familiarized you with Theodore Jackson. Now, it’s time to meet another member of Armwood’s terrific defensive front. Alton Bailey. “He’s pretty good, too,” Hawks defensive coordinator Matt Thompson said. A junior, the 6-foot-4, 263-pound Bailey reminds some at Armwood of former lineman Torrey Davis, a five-star talent who is now at Florida. Bailey and Davis have similar builds, and similar games (both are quick feet and possess active hands). One difference, Thompson said, is that Bailey “works a little harder.” A tackle, Bailey transferred to Armwood during the offseason from Tampa Bay Tech. He called Friday night’s matchup with Plant “the biggest game of his life” and said he looked forward to playing against star Panthers quarterback Aaron Murray. Last week versus Lakeland Lake Gibson, Bailey performed at a high level and that has his coaches optimistic about his future. “He went up against a pretty good line and held his own,” Thompson said. “He did some things really well.”

He took an unofficial visit to OSU two weeks ago but hasn’t received any offers. “It feels real weird,” Widener said. “It’s a big transition, not being able to stay with the same people, same teammates.” Widener is one of nearly a dozen former Northeast players who moved to Centennial this summer. With the added numbers, Centennial has more than double the number of players it did last year for its inaugural season. “People think we’re asleep in district. I think we should have a good chance at pushing for playoffs,” Widener said. “From last year, it’s like a whole 360. We’ve got 45-50 kids out. It’s really a new path, new direction for us.””

It’s the one part of his life he doesn’t guard tightly or reserve for only those in his inner circle. He can’t. Football is Matthew Elam’s safe haven. Where in the midst of violent hits, extreme pressure and intense scrutiny, he finds his moment of peace. For some players, the sport is a way of life. For Elam, a junior at Dwyer High, it’s a way to deal with life. And all that life has thrown at him in just 16 years. Many teenagers spend their high school years worrying about fitting in, finding the right person to date and what their future will hold. Elam worries most about having to see his mom in pain again and watching the tears covering her cheeks. He fears attending another funeral of a family member or letting down those closest to him. It bothers him he never said “I love you” to his brother again before he died. “If it wasn’t for God in this family, we wouldn’t be able to face day after day after all we’ve gone through,” said Addie Elam-Lewis, Elam’s mother, who has buried two children. Revisiting the pain As school let out on a Friday in May, Elam received a phone call from a basketball teammate. He’s heard Elam’s older brother Donald Elam, 33, had been shot and killed. A call home confirmed the news. His family refused to let him drive home in his emotional state and sent his sister Mary to pick him up. Suddenly, Elam was thrown into a familiar state: mourning a sibling. Nine years ago, Elam’s sister, Christina, was shot and killed in his Riviera Beach neighborhood. She was 12. Elam will never forget the day Christina died. His older brother Abram, who now plays for the New York Jets, had just settled in at the kitchen table to do his homework. Elam, who was 8, sat quietly in front of the TV. Their tranquil situation was interrupted by a hurried knock on the door. A friend of Abram’s rushed over to tell the family that Christina had been shot. Abram sprinted out the door to find his sister. Elam ran after him before his mother could catch him. For many years, Elam buried the pain of his sister’s death deep inside himself. It was a subject he could rarely talk about, much less deal with. With the murder of his brother this summer, those feelings bubbled to the surface again. Put it to use This time, Elam refused to let the pain eat at him. “I let [his death] motivate me,” Elam said. “I’ve seen my mom lose children and she can’t lose any more, so I have to stay positive. And I have to work hard so my mom can see me make it.” Elam committed himself to the weight room and conditioning like he never has before. He met his half-brother Terry Bradden (quarterback at Inlet Grove) for 6 a.m. beach workouts followed by evenings of more sprints and lifting with his new teammates at Dwyer. The tears turned into sweat and the sweat into 10 additional pounds of muscle on an already-chiseled body. While Elam tries to conceal his pain, it is visible each day. Written on his white cleats are phrases such as: RIP Don II, Donald Runner #2 RIP (a brother who was shot and killed four years before Elam was born), Christyboo #22, Free Kude (a cousin in jail). He changed his number to 22 this season in honor of Christina, who used that number while playing sports. “Let me do this for them,” Elam said. “I don’t feel like I’m only playing for myself. I try hard not to let anyone down. Play like if they would be there to watch me.” To say that Elam completely forgets his past once he steps on the field is far from the truth. “I still carry [the pain] with me every day,” Elam said. “I always have it on my back like a book bag.” Some days it feels heavier than others. As much as his pain is his motivation, it’s also his curse. Top-notch talent. Elam was the first player in the past five seasons at Palm Beach Lakes to start every game as a freshman. Former Lakes coach Dan Sanso said it was obvious Elam’s skill set, ability and physical maturity were extremely advanced for his age. As a sophomore, Elam emerged as one the county’s elite players. He was named first-team All-County for the Sun Sentinel. This summer, Elam transferred to Dwyer through the No Child Left Behind Public School Choice Program. He is the only junior on the Sun Sentinel’s Super 11 team. Florida Football magazine touts Elam as one of, if not the top, prospect out of Florida in the Class of 2010. Major-college offers are already pouring in. Elam’s listed at 6 feet, 205 for this season, but doctors expect him to grow to 6-4 or 6-5. “He could be a candidate for Mr. Florida if everything falls into place,” Sanso said. “There is no doubt in my mind that he has never even touched his potential yet.” Helping Elam to live up to the expectations is Abram. His brother was a standout safety for Cardinal Newman, going on to play for Notre Dame and Kent State. He had two unsuccessful stints with the Cowboys before signing on with and eventually starting last season with the Jets. “I always tell him I don’t want him to be like me, I want him to be better than me,” Abram said in a phone interview from New York. The two are more than brothers, with Abram more like a father to Elam. Abram takes pride in helping to encourage his brother, pass down his football knowledge and teach him right from wrong. There is no one Elam admires more than his brother, having wished he could move to New York at times to be near his sibling. Elam played safety the past two seasons, but the Dwyer coaching staff is considering a move to linebacker. It’s a position Elam played until high school. The prospect of that change has Elam smiling. His favorite part of the game is hitting a running back or blitzing a quarterback. Handing out big hits is what makes him go. “He will be a big help to us because he’s so aggressive with so much speed and is a headhunter on defense,” Dwyer running back Donald Russell said. “It’s nice not to have to worry about playing against him anymore.” Elam also figures to play a bigger role offensively this year. He will line up at receiver, in the backfield as a running back and get to return kicks as well. His ability to dominate on offense as well as defense was obvious last season, but his conditioning kept him from excelling. By the end of the season he accumulated a number of nagging injuries in his back and hips. A new summer workout commitment, a healthier attitude and a change of scenery make Elam feel like he’s ready for a new challenge. “The next day is not promised, so I try to live every day to the fullest and have fun because you never know what’s going to happen tomorrow,” Elam said.”

He was a part-time starter as a freshman and as a sophomore averaged 11 ppg and 6 apg…………Wants to major in business or marketing…………..3.25 GPA……………..Falcons’ Young Blossoms Into a Dual Threat By Josh Barr Washington Post Staff Writer Friday, September 5, 2008:  “A starter on the Good Counsel basketball team since his freshman year, Louis Young spent the summer of 2006 on the travel-team circuit, honing his skills as a point guard in gyms across the country. This summer, Young traded his high-tops for cleats, dedicating himself to improving as a football player after starting at cornerback last season as a sophomore. “This year he wants to play offense,” Good Counsel Coach Bob Milloy said with a smile. “So he came to the summer stuff.” Young learned the routes run by the team’s wide receivers. He hit the weight room, hoping to help set an example for the team’s younger players. And when the third-ranked Falcons open their season tonight at D.C. public school defending champion Dunbar, Young will start on both sides of the ball. On a team loaded with talented players — led by All-Met linebacker Jelani Jenkins, considered one of the nation’s best at his position — it is easy to lose track of Young. Maryland recruit Caleb Porzel is one of the Washington area’s fastest running backs and the team’s other starting cornerback, Mike Wallace, also has a handful of college scholarship offers. Increasingly, though, many of those college recruiters are paying attention to Young, whose stock shot up after he stood out at a one-day camp at Maryland this summer. “Evidently he threw some people around,” Milloy said. “They offered him that night.” Virginia Tech, Boston College and Stanford soon followed suit. Clemson and Maryland had been recruiting him to play basketball, Young said, but attention from the football scouts “has picked up recently.” Young said he enjoys both sports. Playing football helps him stay aggressive on the basketball court, he said, while playing basketball improves his footwork at cornerback. And getting in top shape physically will help in both sports. Young said he has added more than 20 pounds to his 6-foot-1 frame since last season by working out more and changing his diet to limit red meat and increase protein consumption. “I’m a peanut butter-and-jelly fanatic,” he said. “I eat those all day.” Combine four PB-and-J’s with a salad that includes turkey, cheese, croutons and ranch dressing and you’ve got quite a lunch. It’s easy to see how Young is up to 190 pounds, while retaining the speed and quickness colleges and Milloy love. “I’m open to every college right now,” Young said. “It really hasn’t sunk in to me, with all the attention from the colleges. I’ll deal with it after the season.”"
