Class of 2010: Michigan lands Texan Tony Drake

Posted by roadster997 on March 26, 2009

Sometimes commitments happen out-of-the-blue.  So it was whn Dallas Skyline junior all-purpose-back committed to Michigan earlier today.  He is yet another slotback who should be an idel fit into Michigan’s offensive scheme.

Here is some info on the latest Michigan verbal commitment, Tony Drake.

Tony Drake WR/RB 5′9 170 4.35 Dallas Skyline Texas Michigan

Offers: Michigan

2007 honors: 2-District 11-5A (WR)

One of the top junior all-purpose backs in Texas………….As a junior back-up RB to senior James White (Iowa State signee), he was second on the team in rushing with 55 carries for 429 yards (7.8ypc) and 3 TDs. He added 7 receptions for 73 yards………..As a sophomore starter at WR he was a second team All-district choice and had 260 yards receiving……………Skyline’s second and third-leading receivers, juniors Mike Davis (469 yards, 4 TDs) and Tony Drake (260 yards) are back as well…………..5ATexasFootball.com: “Several backfield weapons return in addition to Hall and Frazier. Senior RB James White (5’9 175), junior RB-LB Domonique Patterson, and junior all-purpose talent Tony Drake (5’9 165) combined for 1,857 rushing yards and 30 rushing touchdowns last season. White and Hampton combined for the majority of that production. All of the Skyline backs are good receivers out of the backfield. Junior Mike Davis (6’1 170) led Skyline in receiving as a sophomore and is a dangerous deep threat. Last season, Davis averaged 20.4 yards per reception. Junior Tony Drake, mentioned above, was Skyline’s second leading receiver a year ago. Drake combined for 605 rushing and receiving yards as a sophomore, and averaged 10.5 yards per touch. Senior Jonathan Rivers is another returning letterman that should make a contribution. A real burner.”………….Projects as a slotback in college…………….. Overshadowed by several D-I prospects at Skyline, including receivers Mike Davis (LSU) and Joe Powell (Oklahoma), but a legit big-time talent……………Vype Top 20 DFW Metroplex RBs (Summer 2008): “13. Tony Drake, Skyline The Raiders are in a situation where they are producing multiple Division I recruits each season, and Drake will be another. He only rushed for 300 yards last season, but remember again like White, he had limited opportunities because Skyline has so many talented skill players. Drake is another back with 4.4 speed.”

Class of 2010: Musings

Posted by roadster997 on March 10, 2009

Well, here we are just over a month after Signing Day for the Class of 2009 and things are really rolling with early verbal commitments in the class of 2010.  As of yesterday, 138 Class of 2010 prospects had already made verbal commitments to Division I schools.

Here are some thoughts on where things stand as of March 10, 2009.

Texas

As usual, Texas leads the pack with 19 early verbals, all of them from in-state prospects.  This is a remarkable number, even by Texas standards.  It includes such blue-chippers as quarterbacks Connor Wood and Case McCoy (Colt’s brother), LB Aaron Benson, offensive linemen Dominic Espinosa and Trey Hopkins, RB Traylon Snead and a deep group of defensive backs (including a super one in Ahmad Dixon), defensive linemen and wide receivers.

There is no questioning that this is an outstanding group, however all of the early verbals beg the question as to whether Texas is sort of putting themselves in a corner by limiting their flexibility to sign some of the remaining in-state supers down the road.

For instance, does landing Traylon Shead negatively impact them with Lache Seastrunk?  At the end of the day, will choosing to offer Snead early until waiting to further evaluate him against such other in-state backs as Ben Malena and D.J. Jones backfire?   Texas landed four quality receivers, however perhaps the top receiver in the state, Darius White, is not one of them and they did not pursue another highly touted prospect in Mike Davis, who subsequently committed to LSU.  Will these recruiting decisions backfire?

I don’t have the answers to these questions, but there are perils to receiving commitments from so many prospects who are just in the middle of their junior year.  Just look at the mess that Joe Paterno at Penn State got himself into several years back when he really got the ball rolling in terms of offering juniors.  A lot of these so-called junior all-americans ended up in a sort of stall pattern and not developing as the Nittany Lions would have hoped.

Why?  Simply because we are talking about college offers going out to prospects based on sophomore and junior film, when they have yet to turn 17 years old.  These kids are, for the most part, still maturing.  Early rankings and ratings of these prospects are just a “snapshot” of where things stand at a certain period of time.  And trust me, as I spend a lot of time talking to coaches and rating prospects, there is a tremendous amount of movement in the rankings and ratings of prospects from these early junior year “snapshots” until they sign on the dotted line in February of their senior year.

A lot can happen in a year.  Some kids will continue to mature and get bigger and stronger.  Other kids will stop growing.  Some kids may get lazy after committing and regress as prospects.  Some kids may be injured.  Some kids will exceed expectations at camps and combines.  Some kids won’t.  Some kids will have great senior years.  Others won’t.  Some kids will decommit to other schools

On the other hand, there are advantages to the Texas strategy.  First, as all of the early verbals are from Texas the risk of  decommitments is mitigated.  Moreover, the Texas staff now has 19 Class of 2010 prospects who will be recruiting other top high school kids to Texas, many from the Class of 2011.

Landing so many early verbals also allows the Texas coaching staff to focus more on three things:

1)  The small handful of elite prospects they are still recruiting for the Class of 2010.  They can give these kids the sort of “bespoke” attention that most other schools, who are still evaluating 2010 prospects, cannot provide.

2)   Getting a head start when it comes to evaluating and recruiting Class of 2011 and 2012 prospects.

3)  Most importantly, they will be able to spend more time coaching their current players.

Notre Dame

The Fighting Irish are off to a nice start with three early verbals, including one of the elite prospects in the nation in California LB Chris Martin.  Martin could team up with a certain recent signee from Barack Obama’s alma mater to form one of the most dynamic linebacker duos in the nation.  I have him ranked as the best linebacker in the nation.

What is really scary as that Notre Dame also leads for my third-ranked linebacker, Californian Anthony Barr, who happens to be the son of former Notre Dame player Tony Brooks and nephew of Reggie Brooks.  Whether Barr ends up as a college linebacker, however, is still up in the air.  He had a tremendous season as a running back and with his size and athleticism could also play on the defensive line or at TE.  He’s a splendid prospect and would be a huge get for the Irish.

There are a couple of other sons of former players who are being heavily recruited.  At one time it looked as though Notre Dame’s top recruiting target at quarterback would be Jake Heaps out of Washington.  Heaps, however, reportedly did not impress onlookers at the San Antonio U.S. Army Combine in early January and word is that Notre Dame may be looking in another direction.  Other quarterbacks who have been offered include the fast-rising Blake Bell (at present my top-ranked QB in the nation), Devin Gardner, Austin Hinder and a certain Nick Montana.

Montana, the son of former Irish great Joe Montana, is a fast-rising prospect who plays for the same program that sent Jimmy Clausen to Notre Dame.  He has probably improved more than any other junior QB in the nation over the past year as he has started to fill out and mature.  As a consequence, once his junior film made the rounds the offers came rolling in.   Word is that Notre Dame is making a big push to land him and that the Irish are now the prohibitive favorite.

Georgia WR Tai-ler Jones is another prep star who has a father (Andre Jones) who played at Notre Dame.  He currently has over 30 offers and is one of the most “reported” prospects on various web sites.  He must have a great PR man.  Every year there are three or four kids who I see updates on every time they receive an offer.  This year, Tai-ler is one of those kids.

The other two Notre Dame verbals are outstanding Illinois lineman Christian Lombard, one of the nations best, and local stud WR Daniel Smith (South Bend Clay).

What could really be downright scary for Notre Dame this year is their offensive line recruiting.  It is a great year for top-flight offensive linemen from Catholic Notre Dame feeder schools.  Seantrel Henderson (St. Paul Cretin-Durham) is the best in the nation, but the Irish may have a better chance at landing the nearly as good Brandon Linder, out of a program that is just loaded with D-I prospects this year – Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas.  Matt James out of Cincinnati St. Xavier is another stud who the Irish  could and up battling Ohio State to land.

The Best Quarteback in the Nation?

It is still early, but there has been a lot of movement in my quarterback rankings the past month as I review film and get a feel for the top prospects.  At present, my number one ranked prospects in the nation is Blake Bell (6-6, 215, 4.7) out of Wichita Bishop Carroll in Kansas.  He is a tall and athletic quarterback who only moved to the position as a junior after playing WR as a sophomore.  He has great height, a cannon for an arm, can make all the throws and has the athleticism to flush out of the pocket and make plays.

Others quarterbacks to watch out for include the talented dual-threat QB Devin Gardner out of Inkster, Michigan.  He is a tremendous athlete but needs to work on his throwing mechanics.  Weren’t we saying the same thing about Terrelle Pryor two years ago?

Philip Sims out of Chesapeake Oscar Smith High in Virginia seems like he has been around forever.  He has a great arm but will need to work on his drops as he plays in the shotgun.

The aforementioned Jake Heaps and Nick Montana may lack the stature of some of the other QBs and may be accused of playing against poor competition (Heaps) or being system QBs (Montana), but they have thus far pretty much done everything asked of them and have very impressive film.

Early verbals Connor Wood and Case McCoy (both Texas), Trey Burton (Florida), Scotty Young (Texas Tech) and Paul Jones (Penn State) also rate near the top in this years QB class.

Some others include athletic QBs Terrance Broadway, Blake Sims, Robert Bolden, Jeffrey Godfrey, Anthony Gonzalez and Christian Green, and pro-style QBs Austin Hinder, Pete Thomas, Jesse Scroggins (my favorite “sleeper”; watch for him to move up), Zach Lee and Tyler Arndt.

Last but not least is Sherman Oaks (CA) Notre Dame QB Ryan Kasdorf.  He earns my Kyle Boller award for coming out of relative obscurity to emerge as a star.  Boller did not start until his senior year in high school.  Kasdorf started as a junior after playing JV ball as a sophomore, and he put up HUGE numbers for one of the best programs in California.  Kasdorf completed 69 percent of his passes (171-248) for 3,291 yards and 36 touchdowns.  What I do not understand is why he has yet to receive an offer.  Somebody offer him!  He is outstanding!

I’ll have more tomorrow.

A sprained ankle couldn\’t stop Kevin Parks. Neither could defenses. Parks, a junior running back at West Rowan, battled through a playoff injury to help the Falcons win the N.C. 3A championship and go 15-1. His final statistics, while impressive, might have been loftier if he hadn\’t been limited early during the playoffs. He rushed for 2,864 yards and 43 touchdowns on 386 carries. The standout carry was his first in the state championship game – 81 yards and a touchdown on the first play, sparking a 35-7 victory against West Craven. Parks, 5-foot-9 and 185 pounds, is the Observer Offensive Player of the Year. His 2,864 yards led North Carolina rushers, and put him above 7,000 in three seasons. “Kevin is just a real tough kid, physically and mentally tough,” West Rowan coach Scott Young said. “He has good vision, balance and adequate speed. But he\’s such a high-character kid, too.” Parks finished with 219 yards and three touchdowns in the final, and set up another score with a 56-yard run. His ankle injury reduced his carries in earlier playoff games, and coaches didn\’t want to risk further injury by overuse. “Every time I\’d ask him, he\’d tell me he\’d be fine to play,” Young said, laughing. “What he did was phenomenal. He\’d go to rehab twice a day, at different locations, and missed some practice. As a staff, we\’d sit down and design game plans with him and without him. It caused some sleepless nights.” The awards began rolling in after the title game, in which he was named most valuable player. Parks was named North Piedmont 3A Player of the Year, and Rowan County Player of the Year. “He is so punishing on tacklers,” Young said. “As the game wears on, that has an effect.”…………..Impressive at the April 19, 2008 Charlotte NUC and was invited to participate at the Ultimate 100 NUC

It’s the one part of his life he doesn’t guard tightly or reserve for only those in his inner circle. He can’t. Football is Matthew Elam’s safe haven. Where in the midst of violent hits, extreme pressure and intense scrutiny, he finds his moment of peace. For some players, the sport is a way of life. For Elam, a junior at Dwyer High, it’s a way to deal with life. And all that life has thrown at him in just 16 years. Many teenagers spend their high school years worrying about fitting in, finding the right person to date and what their future will hold. Elam worries most about having to see his mom in pain again and watching the tears covering her cheeks. He fears attending another funeral of a family member or letting down those closest to him. It bothers him he never said “I love you” to his brother again before he died. “If it wasn’t for God in this family, we wouldn’t be able to face day after day after all we’ve gone through,” said Addie Elam-Lewis, Elam’s mother, who has buried two children. Revisiting the pain As school let out on a Friday in May, Elam received a phone call from a basketball teammate. He’s heard Elam’s older brother Donald Elam, 33, had been shot and killed. A call home confirmed the news. His family refused to let him drive home in his emotional state and sent his sister Mary to pick him up. Suddenly, Elam was thrown into a familiar state: mourning a sibling. Nine years ago, Elam’s sister, Christina, was shot and killed in his Riviera Beach neighborhood. She was 12. Elam will never forget the day Christina died. His older brother Abram, who now plays for the New York Jets, had just settled in at the kitchen table to do his homework. Elam, who was 8, sat quietly in front of the TV. Their tranquil situation was interrupted by a hurried knock on the door. A friend of Abram’s rushed over to tell the family that Christina had been shot. Abram sprinted out the door to find his sister. Elam ran after him before his mother could catch him. For many years, Elam buried the pain of his sister’s death deep inside himself. It was a subject he could rarely talk about, much less deal with. With the murder of his brother this summer, those feelings bubbled to the surface again. Put it to use This time, Elam refused to let the pain eat at him. “I let [his death] motivate me,” Elam said. “I’ve seen my mom lose children and she can’t lose any more, so I have to stay positive. And I have to work hard so my mom can see me make it.” Elam committed himself to the weight room and conditioning like he never has before. He met his half-brother Terry Bradden (quarterback at Inlet Grove) for 6 a.m. beach workouts followed by evenings of more sprints and lifting with his new teammates at Dwyer. The tears turned into sweat and the sweat into 10 additional pounds of muscle on an already-chiseled body. While Elam tries to conceal his pain, it is visible each day. Written on his white cleats are phrases such as: RIP Don II, Donald Runner #2 RIP (a brother who was shot and killed four years before Elam was born), Christyboo #22, Free Kude (a cousin in jail). He changed his number to 22 this season in honor of Christina, who used that number while playing sports. “Let me do this for them,” Elam said. “I don’t feel like I’m only playing for myself. I try hard not to let anyone down. Play like if they would be there to watch me.” To say that Elam completely forgets his past once he steps on the field is far from the truth. “I still carry [the pain] with me every day,” Elam said. “I always have it on my back like a book bag.” Some days it feels heavier than others. As much as his pain is his motivation, it’s also his curse. Top-notch talent. Elam was the first player in the past five seasons at Palm Beach Lakes to start every game as a freshman. Former Lakes coach Dan Sanso said it was obvious Elam’s skill set, ability and physical maturity were extremely advanced for his age. As a sophomore, Elam emerged as one the county’s elite players. He was named first-team All-County for the Sun Sentinel. This summer, Elam transferred to Dwyer through the No Child Left Behind Public School Choice Program. He is the only junior on the Sun Sentinel’s Super 11 team. Florida Football magazine touts Elam as one of, if not the top, prospect out of Florida in the Class of 2010. Major-college offers are already pouring in. Elam’s listed at 6 feet, 205 for this season, but doctors expect him to grow to 6-4 or 6-5. “He could be a candidate for Mr. Florida if everything falls into place,” Sanso said. “There is no doubt in my mind that he has never even touched his potential yet.” Helping Elam to live up to the expectations is Abram. His brother was a standout safety for Cardinal Newman, going on to play for Notre Dame and Kent State. He had two unsuccessful stints with the Cowboys before signing on with and eventually starting last season with the Jets. “I always tell him I don’t want him to be like me, I want him to be better than me,” Abram said in a phone interview from New York. The two are more than brothers, with Abram more like a father to Elam. Abram takes pride in helping to encourage his brother, pass down his football knowledge and teach him right from wrong. There is no one Elam admires more than his brother, having wished he could move to New York at times to be near his sibling. Elam played safety the past two seasons, but the Dwyer coaching staff is considering a move to linebacker. It’s a position Elam played until high school. The prospect of that change has Elam smiling. His favorite part of the game is hitting a running back or blitzing a quarterback. Handing out big hits is what makes him go. “He will be a big help to us because he’s so aggressive with so much speed and is a headhunter on defense,” Dwyer running back Donald Russell said. “It’s nice not to have to worry about playing against him anymore.” Elam also figures to play a bigger role offensively this year. He will line up at receiver, in the backfield as a running back and get to return kicks as well. His ability to dominate on offense as well as defense was obvious last season, but his conditioning kept him from excelling. By the end of the season he accumulated a number of nagging injuries in his back and hips. A new summer workout commitment, a healthier attitude and a change of scenery make Elam feel like he’s ready for a new challenge. “The next day is not promised, so I try to live every day to the fullest and have fun because you never know what’s going to happen tomorrow,” Elam said.”

This summer, Young traded his high-tops for cleats, dedicating himself to improving as a football player after starting at cornerback last season as a sophomore. “This year he wants to play offense,” Good Counsel Coach Bob Milloy said with a smile. “So he came to the summer stuff.” Young learned the routes run by the team’s wide receivers. He hit the weight room, hoping to help set an example for the team’s younger players. And when the third-ranked Falcons open their season tonight at D.C. public school defending champion Dunbar, Young will start on both sides of the ball. On a team loaded with talented players — led by All-Met linebacker Jelani Jenkins, considered one of the nation’s best at his position — it is easy to lose track of Young. Maryland recruit Caleb Porzel is one of the Washington area’s fastest running backs and the team’s other starting cornerback, Mike Wallace, also has a handful of college scholarship offers. Increasingly, though, many of those college recruiters are paying attention to Young, whose stock shot up after he stood out at a one-day camp at Maryland this summer. “Evidently he threw some people around,” Milloy said. “They offered him that night.” Virginia Tech, Boston College and Stanford soon followed suit. Clemson and Maryland had been recruiting him to play basketball, Young said, but attention from the football scouts “has picked up recently.” Young said he enjoys both sports. Playing football helps him stay aggressive on the basketball court, he said, while playing basketball improves his footwork at cornerback. And getting in top shape physically will help in both sports. Young said he has added more than 20 pounds to his 6-foot-1 frame since last season by working out more and changing his diet to limit red meat and increase protein consumption. “I’m a peanut butter-and-jelly fanatic,” he said. “I eat those all day.” Combine four PB-and-J’s with a salad that includes turkey, cheese, croutons and ranch dressing and you’ve got quite a lunch. It’s easy to see how Young is up to 190 pounds, while retaining the speed and quickness colleges and Milloy love. “I’m open to every college right now,” Young said. “It really hasn’t sunk in to me, with all the attention from the colleges. I’ll deal with it after the season.”"

Class of 2010: Michigan Lands Two Outstanding Wide Receivers

Posted by roadster997 on October 2, 2008

It has been a great week on the recruiting front for Rich Rodriguez and his staff.  Last week they landed versatile Cass Tech prospect Thomas Gordon, who will likely play safety at Michigan.  This week they have picked up early verbals from two of the top junior WRs in the nation – Ricardo Miller and Jeremy Jackson.

Who are some other junior prospects that Michigan fans should keep man eye on?  Prospects such as Dior Mathis, William Gholston, Austin White, Marvin Robinson and Chistian Lombard are names well-known to fans of Michigan recruiting.  What about some off-the-radar prospects who could eventually receive offers?  I’ll be identifying some of these prospects over the next few weeks, starting today.
