News And Notes: One of the top juniors in California……………Junior starter at DT for a powerful program…………Ineligible to play at Servite as a sophomore due to personal issues……………He transferred from Orange Lutheran to Anaheim Servite for his sophomore year………………….One of 3 freshmen on a powerful 14-1 team and he had no stats (OL/DL)………….Great size & strength, motor always on go, fine bull rusher……….1-DL-Southern Section (Los Angeles Times; August 2008): 1. Kirifi Taula, Servite, 6-4, 275, Jr.; All indications are he’s the real deal………………From The Los Angeles Times:  HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL Kirifi Taula gets a new start at Servite The junior defensive tackle, who started his high school career at Orange Lutheran, had to sit out last season and hopes to fulfill his potential. Eric Sondheimer August 30, 2008 Sixth in a series previewing top high school players: The wait is almost over for 16-year-old defensive tackle Kirifi Taula, a 6-foot-4, 275-pound Samoan giant who sat out his sophomore football season after transferring to Anaheim Servite from Orange Lutheran. “There’s hype about how good I am, but no one has seen me play,” he said. Servite Coach Troy Thomas said Taula was his team’s best defensive lineman last season even though he never played in a game. His job was to emulate the opposing team’s top lineman in practice. He also got to go against 6-7, 280-pound Servite tackle Matt Kalil, now a freshman at USC. “I beat him a couple times, but he got me,” Taula said. “It was good experience.” Taula will finally make his varsity debut on Sept. 5 against Santa Fe Springs St. Paul, and Servite coaches can’t wait to turn him loose. “Every week he’d simulate the best defensive lineman, and every week we thought he was better than the guy we faced,” Thomas said. Combining quickness and power, Taula has options when trying to get through or around blockers. “That’s what makes him special,” Thomas said. “He can power you, and he’s athletic. He’s got a little wiggle. With a defensive lineman, you get them either fast or powerful. What separates great defensive linemen is a guy who can do both.” Taula played on Orange Lutheran’s freshman and junior varsity teams, but a broken arm and broken thumb limited his playing time. That didn’t stop him from making an impression on varsity Coach Jim Kunau, who called him one of the best players from Orange Lutheran’s class of 2010. But Taula was asked to leave school after a disciplinary incident that he blames on himself. “God gave me an obstacle to go through and I failed,” he said. “Then he gave me a second chance to go to Servite to prove myself as a football player and student. “I was on the wrong track. It was my fault. I’ve changed a lot. It was sort of a wake-up call for me.” For the last year, Thomas said Taula has been a model student on and off the field. “He’s a fun kid to be around,” he said. “He knows when to have fun and when to work. He’s got this big smile.” Taula’s smile comes out when he successfully downs a quarterback. Sacks give him great pleasure. “I get this tingling feeling,” he said. Taula knows how to turn up the intensity during a game. “I’m a nice guy — except on the field,” he said. “Then nobody likes me. The way I play, I never talk. I always have my game face on.” When he went to Texas for a two-week trip last June to visit a cousin, it came as no surprise that a high school football coach suggested he stay. “The coach kept talking to me, ‘We’ll buy you a house if you go to my school,’ ” Taula said. “I think he was joking.” Clearly, there’s much anticipation for what Taula might be able to accomplish this season and what kind of player he really is. “I can’t wait,” he said. “I just want to show how good I am.”.

Following Monday’s practice, Crusaders coach Bob Henriquez said lineman Chaz Green (6-foot-6, 268 pounds, far right) and receiver Jordan Jones (6-4, 185, near right), formerly of Palm Harbor University, have joined the team. Green is a particularly big catch. The Crusaders, who graduated four of five starters on the offensive line, can use the help up front. In Green, they’ve gotten themselves a solid tackle who has big-time potential. In fact, after performing well at various camps this summer, he earned a scholarship offer from USF — even though he’s only a junior. Green also could see action at tight end and on the defensive line. “He,” Henriquez said, “has a huge upside. He’s an outstanding athlete. He’s raw. He hasn’t played a lot.” Jones, also a junior, gives TC another solid skill player. And they already have several.

And in today’s Times, John C. Cotey familiarized you with Theodore Jackson. Now, it’s time to meet another member of Armwood’s terrific defensive front. Alton Bailey. “He’s pretty good, too,” Hawks defensive coordinator Matt Thompson said. A junior, the 6-foot-4, 263-pound Bailey reminds some at Armwood of former lineman Torrey Davis, a five-star talent who is now at Florida. Bailey and Davis have similar builds, and similar games (both are quick feet and possess active hands). One difference, Thompson said, is that Bailey “works a little harder.” A tackle, Bailey transferred to Armwood during the offseason from Tampa Bay Tech. He called Friday night’s matchup with Plant “the biggest game of his life” and said he looked forward to playing against star Panthers quarterback Aaron Murray. Last week versus Lakeland Lake Gibson, Bailey performed at a high level and that has his coaches optimistic about his future. “He went up against a pretty good line and held his own,” Thompson said. “He did some things really well.”

On his first carry in a Niceville football uniform, the 5-foot-8, 170-pound junior halfback exploded for a 56-yard touchdown run against Crestview in a spring game. Now, Finch, who transferred to Niceville from Edmond North High in Edmond, Okla., is eager to cash-in for the Eagles when it really counts. He arrives at Niceville with a highly-touted reputation and much expectation. “I don’t really think it’s pressure,” said Finch, a 2008 Daily News Dandy Dozen selection. “I don’t really think about stuff like that. I was nervous before the Crestview game, but I scored on my first carry. I just go into the season and play the way I know I can play.” How can he play? As a sophomore last season, Finch started every game for Edmond North and accumulated 1,600 all-purpose yards and 14 touchdowns while touching the ball in a variety of ways. At Niceville, he’ll do much the same, rushing the ball, catching it and returning punts. “Wherever the coach puts me, that’s where I play,” Finch said “I just try to contribute to the team, help us to win. My goal is just winning games.” Niceville coach John Hicks anticipates seeing some magic from his new arrival. “Roy is so explosive and can change directions so well,” Hicks said. “He gives you the one thing that a lot of players can’t, and that’s the ability to make a guy miss. That usually results in big plays.”

Bray has had his problems at both schools, including a five-day suspension from Canyon during the spring semester of his freshman year, followed by a few run-ins at Alemany last season, one resulting in a one-game suspension. “We’re on good terms. We just have to make sure Antonio is eligible in terms of residency and grades,” Canyon coach Chris Varner said. “There’s no question about his ability. No one can argue that he’s something special. I think he’s matured, too. We’ll see.” Bray, who scored seven touchdowns last season for Alemany, including two on kick returns, practiced with Canyon for the first time Wednesday. “He looks good. He looks fast,” Varner said

News And Notes: One of the top junior RBs on the Florida Gulf Coast………….He transferred from Sarasota Out-of-Door Academy to Bradenton Southeast for his junior year…………He rushed for almost 2,000 yards as a freshman and sophomore at a 1B school…………2.8 GPA………..ODA transfer Bowden brings skills to Southeast By RYAN T. BOYD, Bradenton Herald : “After rushing for nearly 2,000 yards the past two seasons at Out-of-Door Academy, Waymon Bowden needed a change – and a challenge. At ODA, the tailback known for his bruising style plowed over opponents from small schools in Class 1B. However, the school on the Manatee-Sarasota county border gave Bowden a solid educational foundation as he carried a 2.8 grade-point average. But he still needed more from an athletic standpoint. So this summer, the 5-foot-8, 190-pound Bowden opted to take the challenge and relieve a strain on his family. He transferred to Southeast High, a school where his father, Waymon Bowden Sr., was a standout linebacker in the mid-1980s “It was more easy on me location-wise,” said the two-time Herald All-Area team selection. “My family had trouble getting me back and forth, and I felt it was time for a challenge, and it would be easier on me and my family.” Waymon Bowden Sr. said his son felt he’d reached his peak for the Thunder and he needed a bigger test on a bigger stage. Not to mention, it was a chance to follow in his father’s footsteps Waymon Sr. really liked ODA and was thrilled with the educational base the school laid for his son, so he stalled on giving Waymon Jr. – who scored 22 touchdowns in two season for the Thunder – the OK to transfer. “I wanted to see if his heart was really into the decision,” the elder Bowden said. A few weeks later, the father and son revisited the issue, and little Waymon convinced his father. “Really, he wanted to play where I played,” Waymon Bowden Sr. said of his son, who’s received interest from Florida State, LSU and Rutgers. “He enjoyed ODA, but he wouldn’t have been satisfied with how things would have turned out not playing at Southeast.” Southeast opens the season at Palmetto at 7:30 p.m. today. Last season, the Tigers beat the Noles in a heartbreaker 14-10. It was Palmetto’s first win over Southeast in 15 years. Paul Maechtle, Southeast’s long-time coach, isn’t an advocate of students transferring from school to school inside the same county, but Bowden is the type of talent coaches wouldn’t mind compromising their views for. “It’s like when they added the shot clock in college basketball, people for awhile didn’t like it,” he said. “Now they love it. You just learn to adjust to (transfers). You just realize you are going to lose a few, and along the way you are going to gain someone. This year we are the beneficiary.” The Noles’ running back position was immediately bolstered with the arrival of Bowden. However, Maechtle must decide how to distribute the carries between starting sophomore tailback Desmond Blue and Bowden. For Bowden, the transition from Class 1B to Class 4A hasn’t been easy. He must have proper technique, run low to the ground, and run through the designated holes on the 4A level. Just operating off natural talent isn’t an option anymore. Last Friday in Southeast’s preseason game at Seminole High, Bowden rushed for 44 yards on nine carries. “The (competition) is a lot faster,” said Bowden, who wears jersey No. 33, the same number his father wore. “They are more aggressive. I don’t think it will be too hard to adjust to.” He wanted the challenge, and now Bowden must prove he’s up to the task. “People are saying that I’m not going to do here what I did at ODA,” he said. ” I’m not worried about that. When I came here the players accepted me with open arms, so I’m going to go out and play hard like I normally do.”"………………………….Sarasota Herald Tribune “August 29. 2007 10:22AM Ackerman, ODA sophomores will be strong It’s starting to become clear that the Out-of-Door Academy football team will have its best season two years from now, in 2009. That’s because its sophomore class keeps getting better. And the players keep doing more for the team. A perfect example of that is Brian Ackerman, a sophomore linebacker who will also be the backup tailback to fellow sophomore Waymon Bowden on the offense.”I saw that Brian is physical, he has nice feet and decent vision,” ODA coach Brett Timmons said. “We can experiment with him with a few touches here and there because we need to find a backup for Waymon because he’s not a machine and he can’t go all game long. With Brian playing linebacker and being aggressive we felt as a staff that he would fit the mold of what we were trying to do.” Ackerman will be joined in the linebacking corps by Bowden, fellow sophomore Sam Logan (Cardinal Mooney transfer) and junior Crispian Green. And they will be playing right behind a line that features sophomore defensive end Jamie Onufrak. And that’s not even mentioning sophomore A.J. Strong, who will be out for the season after shoulder surgery but was at practice on the sidelines in a sling Tuesday……………….Tampa Underclass Combine-April 22, 2007: Named the fastest freshman……………….Bowden named Class 1A honorable mention all-stateHERALD STAFF Out-of-Door Academy freshman and Manatee County resident Waymon Bowden Jr. was named honorable mention all-state for Class 1A football in balloting released Monday. Bowden, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound running back, missed the season’s first two regular-season games but made an immediate impact when added to the Thunder lineup. He scored two touchdowns to help ODA to its first victory on school history. A member of the Manatee Mustangs Midgets championship team in 2005, Bowden also played linebacker for the Thunder.

Junior running back David Dash was declared eligible to play for Miller earlier this month after winning his appeal. The CIF had suspended Dash for two years — the rest of his high school career — after alleging false information on his hardship transfer request from Fontana High. With the fiasco apparently behind him, Dash can focus on making it all worth the trouble. He rushed for 1,211 yards last year for a 2-8 Fontana team. In theory at least, Dash could run wild in Jeff Steinberg’s spread offense at Miller. “I think it was a good decision coming here,” Dash said. “I like it a lot because I like the system and what we do. Times (August 2008): “Football: Dorsey loses its quarterback to Cathedral: Josh Williamson, the starting quarterback at Dorsey last season as a sophomore, has transferred to Los Angeles Cathedral, joining another ex-Dorsey player, running back Kevin Ally. Williamson, however, could have a difficult time breaking into the starting lineup at Cathedral, where junior Shaun Alexander is firmly in control of the offense, Coach Kevin Pearson said Tuesday. Cathedral plays in the tough Del Rey League with Gardena Serra and Harvard-Westlake and is in the same playoff division as Oaks Christian. Williamson’s departure from Dorsey leaves the Dons’ offense in need of help. He was the key player during summer passing leagues, and his absence means that Crenshaw deserves to be the overwhelming favorite to win the Coliseum League title”

Best projects as a safety in college due to his nice size, along with running and hitting ability………….Attended 2008 U.S. Army Combine…………August 8, 2007, Tulsa World: “Weller inherits a Class 5A Edison team that finished a disappointing 2-8 in 2006 following consecutive playoff appearances. Behind the talent of 6-foot-3, 210-pound junior quarterback Terrell Williams, the plan is to return the Eagles to postseason play. However, there are obstacles to overcome. \”When I was young Edison had great teams. Edison traditionally has an outstanding program,\” Weller said. \”I never use the term \’rebuilding,\’ but they graduated some outstanding players in 2005. \”We will have a new offensive and defensive scheme with a lot of players who are playing positions for the first time. We\’re young and when you throw them all together, we\’re in a learning process. We can be competitive and we\’ve got talent, but first we\’ve got to learn the offense and defense.\” Weller will implement a pro-style offensive attack and a 5-2 defense, schemes he first learned as a player at Oklahoma State. He wants balanced ball movement and hopes Williams can help him achieve that goal. Williams said he wants to throw for 1,500 yards and run for 1,000. As the stepson of former high school All-America quarterback and University of Oklahoma player Angelo Hamilton, he has the pedigree. The only problem is that Williams has never played quarterback before; he lined up at wingback as a sophomore. \”I want to play quarterback because I can control the game,\” said Williams. \”I think I can mold into a quarterback and help us win some more games this season. The biggest thing is our new coaches and learning new plays. \”I think our varsity has bonded this year and we know each other better. I think we will be playoff bound. I feel good about this year and I feel good about our coaching staff. I\’ve always been able to throw the ball.\” Williams said the fact that both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have already shown interest in him will serve as motivation. Weller said he has complete faith in Williams to guide the Eagles. \”He\’s an outstanding athlete and a great runner. He\’s improving every day on his passing skills,\” Weller said. \”We\’re excited to have him here. It doesn\’t matter who we play, he\’ll be one of the best athletes on the field.\””

Daryel Scott, a starter at defensive back last year at Robinson, will play for Hillsborough next fall, Robinson coach Mike DePue said Friday. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Scott is a rising senior. “It’s a legitimate transfer,” DePue said. “His parents moved into Hillsborough’s district. It’s not one that’s going to generate buzz concerned with special placements. I’ve talked to (Terriers coach Earl Garcia) and it’s no big deal.” But it is a big loss………………….Tampa Tribune:  “He was one of our top players coming back,” DePue said. “We can’t afford to lose athletes.”What’s new: The Knights picked up a solid addition during the offseason when Daryel Scott, a defensive back, transferred to Robinson from perennial state power Miami Northwestern. Drummond, who was recently named West Hall’s most valuable player on defense this season, has been invited to participate in the All-American combine in San Antonio in January. We’re on the field before the games. “He’s got friends, like [Buford’s] T.J. Pridemore, who has committed to Tech. “And Auburn sent their linebacker coach [James Willis] up to watch him play [against Gainesville]. That really impressed Daniel.” Daniel Drummond hopes to have recruiting behind him prior to his senior season at West Hall next fall. “I do hope that I’ll be fortunate enough to have the opportunity and be able to make a commitment decision before the end of next summer,” he said. “I would like my senior year to be solely focused on just enjoying my last high school season, plus directing all my off-season conditioning and training to improve at whatever position I’m recruited for.””
